Týr (as in the Norse god of war) is one of the most successful metal bands based out of Faroe Islands - an archipelago between Norway and Iceland. The band mostly sings on subject matters based on Viking folklore and mythoi. It was formed in '98 in Denmark by Heri Joensen, Kári Streymoy, and Gunnar H. Thomsen. Joensen's brother Jón and singer Pól Arni Holm joined before the band's debut but left soon after. Terji Skibenæs and Allan Streymoy were roped-in to replace them. The band's debut album How Far to Asgaard was released in 2002 and featured novel renditions of folk songs and poems. The single "Eric the Red," released in 2003, proved to be the group's breakout single and put it on the map. In 2006, Týr signed a global record deal with Napalm Records and released the album Ragnarok that same year. The album's tracklist included songs like "The Hammer of Thor" and "Torsteins Kvaedi." The band's subsequent releases also found success and helped build a loyal fan base. 2012 saw the band sign a multi-record deal with Metal Blade Records. Following the release of Valkyrja in 2013 and a reshuffling in the group's lineup, Týr went on a world tour that lasted for almost three years. Its album Hel came out in 2019 after a gap of six years.
