The 33rd day between Pesach (Passover) and Shavout, Lag B'Omer is an opportunity to take time out and rejoice. It is said that this day was the end of the plague which killed 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva (circa 17-137 CE). Many Israelis choose to have their weddings on Lag B'Omer. It is also customary for people to celebrate the holiday with the lighting of bonfires that can be seen in parks and other public spaces throughout the city.
