Rama Navami is an important religious occasion for the Hindu community throughout the country. Dedicated to honor Lord Rama, this festival falls on the ninth day of the Hindu lunar year (Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami). It celebrates his birth through special prayers at temples and people's homes and also with street processions. The processions signify the return of the dignified king after exile and victory over the demon Ravana. People dressed up as Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Laxman, are gloriously carried in a chariot during the procession. Also sweets and fruits are offered to the deities. Some people also fast on this auspicious day.
