In many ways, the holiday of All Saints Day best reveals the idiosyncrasies of Filipinos. On this day, all roads leading to cemeteries and memorial parks are clogged with vehicles and pedestrians, while the rest of the city empties out and becomes refreshingly devoid of traffic. Although originally intended to be a solemn occasion, this religious feast is now observed with whole extended families visiting, playing games (mah-jongg included) and even spending the night by the graves of their loved ones. The festivities carry on into the following day, All Souls Day.
