King's Day (formerly Queen's Day), celebrated at the end of April, is the most festive occasion of the year. You will see plenty of orange on this day, as it represents the House of Orange, which is the name of the Dutch royal house. The current monarch visits towns on King's Day where special celebrations often in the form of demonstrations of old-fashioned dances and crafts take place. What makes King's Day truly unique, however, are the stalls set up by the roadside. King's Day is known as a "free market" day when people sell household goods they no longer need: the Dutch equivalent of garage sales, except that they are a citywide phenomenon. The festivities actually begin the evening before on so-called King's Night, when revelers fill the streets and many bars and restaurants offer specials.
