One of the most densely-populated of Hong Kong's many islands, dumbbell-shaped Cheung Chau draws huge numbers of visitors to its annual Bun Festival. This Taoist event is celebrated with sweet white buns with auspicious red characters written on them and features 16-meter-high bamboo towers covered with said buns at Pak Tai Temple as well as daily prayers for calm seas and bountiful catches as the new fishing season begins. During the colorful week-long celebration, children parade in bright, traditional costumes, religious ceremonies are held and Chinese opera is staged. The actual dates for this festival are chosen each year by divination, but tend to fall around the 8th day of the 4th lunar month.
