Theater flourished in England during the time of William Shakespeare, but just as popular were the ballads and art songs that served as a soundtrack to the high dramas and low comedies of the time. "An English Garden" is a fertile mix of Elizabethan era tunes -- some associated with Shakespeare and his company and others from later plays -- paired with lively instrumental pieces fit for nobles and groundlings alike. Soprano Emily Noel and a selection of period instruments including fiddles, lutes and citterns bring the music of Elizabethan theater to life in this concert at the Folger Theatre in Washington, DC.
