The Grand Rapids Symphony has brought musical excellence and creativity to the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1930. Music Director David Lockington leads the orchestra each year in eight different concert series, all designed to stimulate the imagination. The symphony is known for interactive and lively performances infused with pop culture, making concerts of both classical and contemporary music accessible to all audiences. The Grand Rapids Symphony is deeply invested in community engagement and holds its annual concert, "Symphony with Soul," to feature both local and national African-American artists. A portion of the proceeds goes into the "Young, Gifted & Black Scholarship Fund," a scholarship created by the Symphony in 2005 to support musical training for African American youth in Grand Rapids.
