Abstract:

Third-World Cinema in Latin America and the Arab World: The Circulation of Imaginaries and the Shaping of a New Shared Identity

Carolina Bracco, Ph.D.

University of Buenos Aires

The development of the Third-World Cinema in Latin America and the Arab World prompted a flow of imaginaries around class consciousness and the rejection of territorial and cultural colonialism, together with the proposal of a more egalitarian future and an ideal of autonomy. This was promoted by the images, testimonies, and statements constructed by the Third-World Cinema, also disseminated and discussed in transnational meetings, public and clandestine screenings. The appraisal of authenticity, the exaltation of the people and the rejection of foreign intervention created a new way of narration and proposed a shared political-cultural identity between the two regions.
