Former Nine Inch Nails vocalist Richard Patrick teamed up with guitarist Brian Liesegang in Cleveland to form the rock band Filter in 1993. As a duo, the two musicians called themselves Filter and released the 1995 album Short Bus, featuring the hit single "Hey Man, Nice Shot." Before touring in support of the album, Filter assembled a live band with guitarist Geno Lenardo, bassist Frank Cavanagh and drummer Matt Walker. Due to creative differences, Liesegang left the band after recording its second album in 1997, and Walker quit to work with The Smashing Pumpkins before the 1999 release of Title of Record. The album spawned Filter's most well-known song, "Take a Picture," which marked a transition in the band's music from industrial rock to a mellower sound. Patrick voluntarily checked himself into rehab in 2002, and various side projects took priority over Filter until 2007, when he began working on new material for the almost forgotten band. Although Filter underwent a series of line up changes, the band resurfaced with three back-to-back releases: Anthems for the Damned in 2008, a greatest hits album titled The Very Best Things in 2009, and The Trouble with Angels in 2010.
