One of the best-known drawing room dramas of the mid-Twentieth Century, An Inspector Calls was written by English playwright J.B. Priestley. Debuted in the Soviet Union in 1945, the play is considered a scathing critique of Victorian English social hierarchy. The Birling family is visited by a man who calls himself Inspector Goole and is seeking information regarding a girl who recently committed suicide. Over the course of his questioning, each member of the family is implicated in the girl's social downfall, which leads to her death.
