The Rural Alberta Advantage is a Canadian trio that formed in 2005 in Toronto. Deciding against incorporating a bass player into the band, the group instead decided to include a pianist, Amy Cole, who doubles as a background vocalist. This focus on a piano lends the melodies a lighter sound than many indie rock bands produce. With its gentle hymns about love in the cold Rocky Mountains and geek life in Toronto, The Rural Alberta Advantage has succeeded in pleasing critics since 2008, with the release of its major label debut Hometowns.
