This public holiday in most of Canada celebrates the birth of Queen Victoria (1819-1901), ruler of the United Kingdom for nearly 40 years. Canada is the only Commonwealth realm that recognizes Victoria Day, making it a distinctly Canadian affair. Many residents mark the day as the beginning of the summer calendar of events and celebrate it by visiting parks, dining outside and maybe downing a two-four (case of beer). In observance of the holiday, most provinces close most city-run facilities. Only Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador is Victoria Day not a statutory holiday.
