The Virgin of the Candlemas is honored in several Latin American countries in early February of each year. In Caracas, the Virgin is celebrated with religious masses in the churches and processions through the streets of downtown. Devotees sing folkloric songs celebrating the Virgin, light candles, and give traditional floral offerings. Other Venezuelan cities also celebrate the Virgin during this time of year; the festivities in Mérida are particularly well known for their colorful ceremonies featuring costumed dancers and indigenous music.
