This is a dual holiday in Mexico. For a small majority this is Columbus Day, celebrating the 1492 discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. However for many Mexicans, this day is celebrated as Día de la Nación Pluricultural (Day of the Races) and honors Gonzalo Guerrero, the father of the Mexican race. Guerrero was a Spanish Conquistador shipwrecked off the coast of Cozumel in 1511. Eventually he assimilated into the Mayan culture by marrying a Mayan princess. Their children are known as "mestizo" and are considered the first Mexicans. Most businesses and services remain open on this day.
