Tom Robinson Band was a new wave/punk rock band from London that formed in 1976 by singer/songwriter and bassist Tom Robinson. Robinson had been performing around London with make-shift bands when he decided to put together a permanent one, starting with his friend and guitarist Danny Kustow. After adding drummer Brian Taylor and keyboardist Mark Ambler, Tom Robinson Band emerged in the middle of the British punk movement. The band regularly appeared at the Rock Against Racism concerts, along with bands such as The Clash and Steel Pulse, while its first single "2-4-6-8- Motorway" made its way into the top five of the UK Singles Charts. Tom Robinson Band released its debut album, Power in the Darkness, in 1978, which certified gold and reached number four on the UK Album Charts. The following year, the band's new label made production decisions that caused friction in the band. After line up changes added to tension in the band, Kustow eventually left the group. Tom Robinson Band continues on with its founder and namesake at the helm.
