Hillfolk Noir is the project of old-timey revivalist Travis Ward. With an accompanying trio capable of carrying out his vision, the group plays a mix of Americana, psychedelic blues, down-home country and tattered rock and roll. The Boise, ID band uses bottleneck guitar, stand-up bass, stripped-down drums and assorted eclectic instruments, such as the singing saw, to carry out its music, giving it a loose but well-arranged feel. Folk and country revivalists aren't hard to find these days, but bands such as Hillfolk Noir are making a great case for continuing the trend.
