Berlin has always been the focus of political and historical events, which is why collections here have a strong focus on social processes. Beyond a purely aesthetic history, the connection between art and society is made clear: the German Empire, colonial history, the First World War, the "Golden" Twenties of the Weimar Republic, the ostracism of the avant-garde under National Socialism, as well as the Second World War and the Holocaust are reflected in the paintings and sculptures found in this exhibition.
