This festival dating back to medieval times features bestial imagery and re-enacts some of the events that took place during the Arab conquest of Berja. It's representative of the battle between Good and Evil and takes place on Corpus Christi, although the celebrations run a few days longer. To start, a giant wooden eagle is paraded around town spitting blazing fireworks from its beak and chasing after onlookers. The procession ends in the tiny square of Sant Pere where the party continues with a series of performances and medieval dances accompanied by the tabal, or kettledrum. It's a magical night of masks and demons.
