His Majesty King Bhumibol was the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history and one of the most respected. It is no wonder his birthday is celebrated joyously every December 5th by the Thais with a grand fireworks display, and buildings and homes elaborately decorated with flags, glittering lights and the Royal Emblem. Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the area around the Grand Palace are the most brightly lit, presenting visitors with excellent photo-taking opportunities. Also known as Father's Day (Thais look upon the King as their father), the event is marked by many festivities throughout Bangkok.
