Wax is a Southern California pop punk band that formed in the early-1990s. The Los Angeles-based group found unexpected fame with the success (and surrounding controversy) of its 1995 music video for the single "California." The Spike Jonze-directed video featured a man running through the streets of Los Angeles on fire in slow motion. Wax unexpectedly found that MTV was pulling the video due to its content, which essentially only piqued audience interest even more. The band enjoyed some fledgling success for its mix of bratty pop punk and alternative rock before disbanding later that year so its members could explore other projects. Wax reformed in 2009 and released the Hangin' On EP that same year.
