Auckland's first festival of all things Irish was in 1994 and has now become an institution. The traditional parade proceeds up Queen Street to Queen's Wharf where there is a fleadh or music festival all afternoon with food stalls and of course Guinness. This is all followed by a 'bus hooley' a free pub-crawl visiting Auckland's Irish pubs. For the sophisticates there is a black (or green) tie banquet on St Patrick's Eve at varied upmarket venues.
