First started at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2005, the Afropunk Festival celebrates African-American culture through arts, music and film. The festival has managed to spread its roots across countries over the years. Originally aimed at providing a platform to black punk artists in a predominantly white culture, Afropunk has gone on to include soul music so as to increase its target audience. The shift has attracted artists like Lenny Kravitz, Sharon Jones, Wicked Wisdom, Trash Talk, etc. The festival has also been expanded to France and Atlanta, GA.
