Megafaun is a trio of musicians based out of Durham, North Carolina that plays experimental indie folk inspired by country, Americana and Appalachian music. The group, which consists of Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund and Phil Cook, use traditional instrumentation of drums, guitars, banjos and bass, but arrange them in such a way that they feel somewhat new and foreign. Their song structures are loose and often spiral into several unexpected directions over the course of a single song. Before Megafaun, the trio had all played in a band in Wisconsin with Justin Vernon, who would later go on to start the successful indie project, Bon Iver. The band remains an up-and-coming entity in the burgeoning indie folk scene.
