Jesus Carazo's historical drama delves into the life of Juana de Castilla, also referred to as Juana la Loca (Joanna the Mad). The passionate and tumultuous life of the Spanish monarch is dramatized from her complex relationship with her parents, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and her husband Philip the Handsome to her own struggles with mental illness. The iconic queen was deeply enmeshed in the political struggles of her time, used as a pawn in both her her family and empire. From her struggling marriages, to imprisonment and confinement at the end of her life, her's is a story of a woman twisted in the fabric of a dynasty of betrayal, usurpation and treason. Her story is fascinatingly unraveled in Carazo's stirring stage portrait, deftly weaving her struggles into a wrenching and engaging theatrical tapestry.
