Primarily known as the lead singer of Soundgarden, and subsequently of Audioslave, Chris Cornell had a screeching voice that sounds like it was designed to peel paint off walls. Since striking out on his own, Cornell toned down his typically heavy grunge style of music in favor of a more subdued sound that highlighted his ability as a songwriter. After playing with members of Rage Against the Machine in the hard-hitting alternative rock band Audioslave from 2001 to 2007, Cornell would reunite with Soundgarden in 2010 to go on to release music and tour. In the midst of a Soundgarden tour in 2017, Cornell was found dead in his hotel room after a show in Detroit.
