Forging a less nerdy breed of nerdcore hip-hop, the emcees in The ThoughtCriminals (not to be confused with the UK industrial band of the same name) rap about everything science fiction novels to their love of Public Enemy, fusing the typical nerdcore use of 8-bit video game synths with heavy-hitting gangster rap beats. A full six-piece, the North Carolina group is composed of more than just emcees and DJs, utilizing four backing instrumentalists that broaden the sound of the band's music. While the members of The ThoughtCriminals may be a group of awkward white guys, they've charmed audiences across the country, playing opening slots for artists that range from underground hip-hop emcees to protest punk bands.
