Laurent Daumali is a French producer and turntablist who goes by the stage name DJ Cam. Unlike many of his contemporaries who have splintered off into niche electro or house genres, Daumali is much more interested in keeping styles such as instrumental hip-hop, downtempo and chillout music alive. Laid-back beats pulled from dusty jazz, soul and golden era hip-hop records are his forte with DJ Cam, layering keyboards, funky bass lines, scratches and the occasional vocal or rap cut-up atop an ice-cold backdrop. Daumali, who is now based out of Los Angeles, is prone to find grooves in his songs and settle into them for awhile, focusing on feeling and vibe more than danceable beats or drastic left-turns. He released his debut album, Underground Vibes, in 1994 and has steadily amassed a devoted following throughout his career.
