Botany is the solo project of Spencer Stephensen, the drummer for the band Sleep Whale and has also been associated with Fleet Foxes. Abandoning the psych-folk of his previous band, Botany focuses more on electronic production, blending layers and layers of vintage samples with live drumming and hazy vocals. Referring to this sound as "hillwave"--essentially because he creates chillwave music in his house, which is located at the top of a hill in a forest. Botany showcases a more organic nature than most chillwave musicians and focuses on a bouncy ebb and flow resembling that of a hilly sonic terrain. The Northern Texas-based musician released his debut EP in 2010, which secured Botany an audience that continued to grow through the publicity he garnered collaborating with popular Fleet Foxes members.
