Beautiful Nubia and the Roots Renaissance Band

Born and raised in Nigeria, Segun Akinlolu studied veterinary science before abandoning it to pursue a career in music in 1997. Deciding to go by the pseudonym Beautiful Nubia, to remind Africans of the past, when they were prominent world rulers, Akinlolu immediately impressed Nigerian natives with his ability to fuse ancient folklore with contemporary philosophy and traditional musical styles with modern sonic aesthetics. Beautiful Nubia has since established himself as a crucial contributor to the world music scene and has won international crowds over with his nine backing instrumentalists, The Roots Renaissance Band.
