Der Bettelstudent (The Beggar Student) is a German-language operetta created by the little-known 19th century Austrian composer Karl Millöcker. Although the operetta was an international success, allowing the composer to retire comfortably as a result, Millöcker's other compositions would never achieve the same level of acclaim. The story follows a nobleman who enlists the aid of a penniless student to pose as a millionaire in order to seduce the daughter of a family he seeks revenge against. Der Bettelstudent is still considered to be one of Austria's most beloved operas, with over four adaptations for film made since 1931.
