Der Besuch der Alten Dame (also known as The Visit or The Visit of the Old Lady in English) is a tragicomic play by Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt written in 1956. The story follows a wealthy old woman who returns to the poor town where she grew up penniless, offering a huge sum of money if the town agrees to kill the man, now happily married, who had wronged her when she was a young woman. Adapted several times for film and television, Der Besuch der Alten Dame is generally considered to be Dürrenmatt's greatest works in addition to being a milestone of 20th Century literature in the German language.
