The novel follows the orphan Anne Shirley as she is mistakenly sent to a brother and sister who intended to adopt a boy to help with their farm work. The novel has been adapted in many different ways, including the world-renowned Canadian musical of 1965 that was performed for Queen Elizabeth II in 1969, a 2007 musical adapted by Nancy Ford, and several lesser known adaptations for theaters throughout the world.
