Susana Baca

Afro-Peruvian folk singer Susana Baca has been a widely revered presence in her native Peru for much of her life. But it wasn't until the 90s, when Baca had aged into her 50s, that she began receiving international fame. Impressed by her delicate Peruvian folk with Brazilian and Cuban influences, David Byrne signed Baca to his Luaka Bop label and began releasing her music worldwide in 1995. Noted for her soulful Spanish lyrics that often are written through collaborations with Peruvian poets, as well as her ability to produce both haunting ballads and upbeat tropical pieces, Susana Baca has become a representative of Peruvian culture around the world.
