Black Chiffon is a play by Scottish writer and playwright Leslie Storm. The play premiered on London's West End in 1949 with 416 performances and a year later on Broadway to wide critical acclaim, running until 1951 after 109 performances. Black Chiffon is about a wealthy mother who, on the eve of her son's high society wedding, becomes a kleptomaniac from the stress of keeping up appearances and steals a black chiffon dress from a local department store. Considered by many to be Leslie Storm's greatest play, Black Chiffon became one of the few plays of the era to challenge conventional assumptions about psychiatry, particularly in how the psychiatrist could be viewed on stage as a detective of the mind.
