The Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra (known in Spanish as the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya or simply the OBC) joins Barcelona's Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu as one of Spain's premier symphony orchestras. However, where the Teatre del Liceu's orchestra focuses primarily on performing for opera and ballet, the Barcelona Symphony principally performs orchestral, ensemble and solo works by some of the world's most talented concert musicians. Located in Barcelona's historical L'Auditori, the OBC has existed in various incarnations over the course of the 20th Century until 1994, when the Catalonian government established the orchestra as the world knows it today. Despite the orchestra's tumultuous history, the OBC has premiered and recorded symphonic works of Spain's most celebrated composers in addition to launching the careers of some of the world's most renowned music directors.
