Combining playful electronics, live instrumentation, elements of noise and deep-rooted classical influences, World's End Girlfriend create beautiful, shape-shifting music. The project is one man, Katsuhiko Maeda - a Tokyo-based composer whose love for classical music at an early age set the table for his later, more experimental work with WEG. At times, the songs float by on a base of piano and strings, sounding simply like contemporary classical compositions. But when jittery beats, noise swells, cut-up vocal samples and odd instruments begin to sputter in and out, it's obvious that Maeda is just as interested in the unexpected as he is the traditional. Fans of forward-thinking electronic music by the likes of Four Tet, Aphex Twin and The Books should find plenty to dissect in World's End Girlfriend's music.
