In its 1994 premiere, the stage comedy Art received great critical acclaim in its exposure of the interconnections between three friends in France arguing over a newly bought piece of art. Serge purchases a large white painting at great expense, putting him under siege by his friend Marc. Yvan is left in the middle, attempting to placate either friend, and hopelessly enmiring himself even further in the situation. This razor-sharp work from French playwright Yasmina Reza has won Tony, Olivier and Moliere awards, and enjoyed multiple major productions internationally. It is a clear-eyed examination of friendship, the politics contained therein, status, and power in the modern age of consumption.
