The Little Dog Laughed is a contemporary play by Douglas Carter Beane. This quick-witted work is exemplary of Beane's tightly constructed style, often described as a modern-day take on the drawing-room comedy. The play is populated by Mitchell, a budding young star who is a closeted homosexual, Alex, a hustler, his naive girlfriend Ellen, and Elaine, a Hollywood power-agent who has trekked to New York to secure a role for Mitchell. As Alex and Mitchell become romantically involved, Elaine fights to keep Mitchell in the closet, fearing it will ruin his career. A battle ensues over Mitchell as Beane examines power, publicity and politics in this Hollywood satire.
