While temporarily transplanted in Edinburgh, Mark Hamilton began writing songs under the long-winded guise of Woodpigeon Divided by Antelope Equals Squirrel. By the time he was back in his native Canada, the now Calgary-based indie-folk songwriter had shortened the name to simply, Woodpigeon, and begun to piece together an eight-piece group of musicians who helped flesh his work out into what it is today. Standard rock instrumentation like guitars, drums and bass supply the foundations of the music, but Woodpigeon doesn't shy away from using flutes, accordions, violins or pianos to create its twee-pop sound, which has sometimes been compared to Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian.
