The Gypsy Princess, or Die Csárdásfürstin in German, is an operetta written by Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman in three acts. The story follows the romantic relationship between a cabaret singer and a man belonging to the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy almost immediately prior to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and the subsequent outbreak of World War I. Although the work is lesser known outside of Europe, it was and continues to be revered as a great work in Austria, Hungary and particularly in the former Soviet Union.
