Cult-like collective WU LYF, which stands for World Unite/Lucifer Youth Foundation, but also is referred to as WHAT UP/LOVING YOUNG FEMALES, Tu-Wang Gang and essentially whatever the band feels like calling itself at live shows, formed in Manchester in 2007. The band members intentionally maintain an air of mystery by wrapping their faces in white sheets in press photos and offering up a consistently rotating cast of players at live shows, intensifying its already eerie resemblance to a cult, which the band allows fans to join by purchasing their 12" on their website, as the purchase includes "membership rights," a flag and a declaration of intent poster. However, despite this slightly bizarre cult semblance/ploy for attention, the band's music is rather palatable for the masses, blending tribal beats with catchy pop melodies and topped off with Ellery Roberts' raspy, blues-inflected vocals.
