The University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that was originally founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787--making it one of the oldest continuously operated bastions of higher education in the United States. The Panthers are the athletic teams that compete for the school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. Though all of the school's teams have managed to carve out respectable reputations for themselves in their own idiosyncratic ways, the university's wrestling and football teams have done much to distinguish themselves by winning several division champions.
