The UTEP Miners are sports teams that play for the University of Texas at El Paso. Established in 1914, UTEP has become a beacon of athleticism in a geographical region that doesn't have a lot lot of professional sporting entertainment. Competing in the NCAA Division I, the Miners are possibly best known for their victorious 1966 basketball championship game that saw the team start with five African-Americans, an important moment in basketball and civil rights history.
