Taking its name from a Danish fairy tale, Esben & the Witch is a trio out of Brighton, England that was formed in 2008. Like most traditional fairy tales, the group's music is both whimsical and disturbingly dark. Layering front woman Rachel Davies' vocals, the music bears a resemblance to chamber pop, but invokes the chamber pop of ghosts more than that of living souls. Full of gothic lyrics, heavy reverb and guitar riffs primarily made up of minor chords, the music of Esben & the Witch has attracted a fan base throughout the UK and US, solidified further by the band's impressive live performance that incorporates bizarre projections and light shows.
