This grandiose stage play written by celebrated playwright John Guare depicts a setting in American history that receives little attention - an independent New Orleans prior to the Louisiana Purchase of 1804. A Free Man of Color gorgeously captures the vibrant, free and often lewd aspects of this city before the United States entered and began the process of institutionalizing class and race.
