Portland, Oregon-based four-piece Chromatics formed in 2002, initially as a noise-punk band. After releasing several singles in this genre, the group altered its lineup slightly and released a debut full-length in 2007 that surprised many of the band's fans, as it dropped its former aesthetic entirely, trading in noise for sleek production and punk for eurodisco. The resulting dark synthpop album, which includes a well-received cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill," garnered Chromatics quite a bit of attention on the blogosphere and a respectable amount of critical acclaim. The band has continued to produce music in the same vein since then and has toured throughout Europe and the US, building a solid fan base.
