Arriving by train from his rural town in Missouri in 1986, Terre Thaemlitz began his highly influential artistic career while attending art school on scholarship in New York City. A transgender at an early age, Thaemlitz's art, whether it be his music, photography, illustrations or philosophical writings, always focus on political and queer issues. Thaemlitz has released music under various monikers and in various genres, including deep house, ambient jazz, electroacoustic and avant-garde since the early 90s. A favorite moniker of Thaemlitz is DJ Sprinkles, who he claims represents all of the unheard musicians, unrecognized artists and outcasts in general. One of his releases under the DJ Sprinkles moniker is an album of deep house entitled Midtown 120 Blues, an exploration of house's roots in a scene made up of social outcasts. A well-respected and intelligent performer, Thaemlitz puts on an act that not only promises quality music, but also promises to make the audience think.
