Wigan Athletic is popular football club from Wigan, Greater Manchester that competes in the EFL Championship. Founded in 1932, the club spent its first few decades playing non league football, before joining the Football League in 1978. Since then, Wigan Athletic has largely featured in the lower divisions, however a steady increase in the quality of its game play enabled to rise up to the Championship division - the second tier of the English league system. A second placed finish in the 2004-05 season earned the club a promotion into the Premier League for the first time in its history. It would go on to play eight seasons in England's top flight, before being relegated in 2013 - the year it also won its first major trophy - The FA Cup.
