Born Diamonté Qiava Valentin Harper in Santa Clara, CA, Saweetie grew up listening to R&B singer Teedra Moses besides powerhouse rappers like Lil' Kim, Trina and Khia. Despite her clear interest in music, she was a straight-A student all her life and won full-ride scholarships to San Diego State University and the University of Southern California. Her interest in music grew further when her rap clips on Instagram began garnering attention. The official video of her breakthrough single "Icy Grl," released on SoundCloud in 2017, earned millions of views within a short span, leading to a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. She followed up this success with the release of her debut EP High Maintenance, which peaked at number 32 and 20 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Heatseekers Albums charts respectively. "Icy Grl," the heart of the EP, was certified platinum in September 2019. Her second EP Icy came out in March 2019 and featured collaborations with Quavo on the songs "Emotional" and "Tip Toes." However, it was London On Da Track's production "My Type" which earned her her first Billboard Hot 100 entry. She has collaborated with numerous other artists on songs like "Expensive," "Give it to 'Em," "No L's" and more.
